- I grew up in Winston-Salem, N.C. not far from the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. When I was in 4th grade, my class went on a tour of the cigarette factory. Joe Camel, one of the most demonized figures in the history of advertising was at his peak. Did it make me a smoker? No. But a little part of me thinks that it just might have gotten me hooked on advertising. Thanks, Joe.
